Tech II
8th grade students will
gain a basic understanding of what the Internet is and how it works to
include exposure to basic networking. Students receive instruction on
how to create basic web pages using HTML coding.
Each student will be
assigned to a computer that will be his/her workstation for the semester.
Students are expected to take care of the computer equipment. Any
intentional damage to the equipment will be reported to the
administration for appropriate action.
The course will begin with
an introduction to the Internet and the World Wide Web. This will be a basic
overview and will include some basic computer networking principles.
Students will then be
instructed on the techniques and terminology required to create a basic
web page using Notepad as an HTML editor and Internet Explorer as a web
browser.
Students will be required
to memorize several HTML tags and attributes in order to create basic
web pages. To include:
-
Standard Mark-up
-
Font Formatting
-
Paragraph and Line-Break
-
Horizontal Rule
-
Image display
-
Page Background
-
Tables
Student grades will be
determined based upon the demonstration of his/her ability to
effectively use the above listed HTML tags and attributes to create a
web page.
Students will also be
instructed on the use of the GIMP graphics creation and editing program.
Photos will require editing prior to being used on the web pages.
Graphics will be created that will also be used on the student web
pages.
Grades will all count
the same and will be determined by the effective completion of each
project. Ten sub-projects will be evaluated separately and will be
combined to create the final web site. Each of the ten sub-projects will
be worth 1-100 points. These separate parts will be combined for a total
of 1000 points.
700 points = C, 800 points
= B, 900+ points = A
Students are expected to
be in class every day. In the event of an absence, the student is
responsible for making up his/her assignments.
Current
Events
The A/B schedule allows
for each class to have seventy minutes in the computer lab. This extra
time allows us to add a section on Current Events to each class. The
first twenty minutes of the class will be set aside for the viewing of CCN Student News. CNN was chosen because it is the only network that
provides this valuable service free of charge. The program topics are politically
neutral and appropriate for grades 8-12. The program can be viewed at
www.cnn.com/studentnews/.
The news program is ten
minutes in length. The remaining ten minutes are devoted to discussion
of the various topics presented that day. All students are
encouraged/expected to participate. A student's grade is in no way
influenced by his/her response to a topic. The goal is to encourage
students to become informed about current events and be able to explain
why they agree or disagree with an issue.
Internet Safety
Students will also receive
instruction on Internet Safety during the class on Fridays.
The topics covered will
be:
-
Cyber Community
-
Personal Safety
-
Screen Names &
Passwords
-
User Profiles
