Computers/Careers
6th grade students will
receive instruction on basic keyboarding skills with an emphasis on
accuracy, not speed.
Each student will be
assigned to a computer that will be his/her workstation for the
semester.
Students are expected to take care of the computer equipment. Any
intentional damage to the equipment will be reported to the
administration for appropriate action.
Students will begin by
learning how the turn the computers on and log in as a student user. Each
student will learn how to create his/her own folder and create documents
that will be saved in the folder.
Each student will use a
program called TyperShark which is an interactive interface that
instructs the student on the proper use of the home keys in order to
teach the corresponding location of the QWERTY keyboard. The program
contains 18 lessons. Students are expected to complete lessons 1-8 prior
to moving to the typing game portion of the program and continuing with
lessons 9-18.
Lesson 8 requires a
student to complete the lesson by typing 25 words per minute.
Accommodations will be made for those who have extreme difficulty
reaching 25 wpm on lesson 8. Each lesson will earn the student 100
points. A student can earn as few as 800 points or as much as 1800
points.
Grading: 800 points = C,
1200 points = B, 1600 points = A
Students are expected to
be in class every day. In the event of an absence, the student is
responsible for making up his/her assignments.
Current
Events
The A/B schedule allows
for each class to have seventy minutes in the computer lab. This extra
time allows us to add a section on Current Events to each class. The
first twenty minutes of the class will be set aside for the viewing of CCN Student News.
CNN was chosen because is the only network that
provides this valuable service free of charge. The program topics are politically
neutral and appropriate for grades 8-12. The program can be viewed at
www.cnn.com/studentnews/.
The news program is ten
minutes in length. The remaining ten minutes are devoted to discussion
of the various topics presented that day. All students are
encouraged/expected to participate. A student's grade is in no way
influenced by his/her response to a topic. The goal is to encourage
students to become informed about current events and be able to explain
why they agree or disagree with an issue.

instruction on Internet Safety during the class on Fridays.
