Computer Literacy
8th grade students will
receive basic instruction on the hardware components that make up a
computer and how they interact. Instruction will also include the distinction between a CRT
and a LCD monitor. The Computer Literacy will develop into a computer
graphics class using the GIMP graphics creation and editing program.
Information will be specific concerning how colors work on a computer
screen and the differences between preparing graphics for the web and
for print media.
Each student will be
assigned to a computer that will be his/her workstation for the
semester.
Students are expected to take care of the computer equipment. Any
intentional damage to the equipment will be reported to the
administration for appropriate action.
Grades will all count the
same and will be determined by the effective completion of each of ten
100-point projects.
Grading: 700 points = C,
800 points = B, 900+ points = A
Students are expected to
be in class every day. In the event of an absence, the student is
responsible for making up his/her assignments.
Current
Events
The A/B schedule allows
for each class to have seventy minutes in the computer lab. This extra
time allows us to add a section on Current Events to each class. The
first twenty minutes of the class will be set aside for the viewing of CCN Student News.
CNN was chosen because it is the only network that
provides this valuable service free of charge. The program topics are politically
neutral and appropriate for grades 8-12. The program can be viewed at
www.cnn.com/studentnews/.
The news program is ten
minutes in length. The remaining ten minutes are devoted to discussion
of the various topics presented that day. All students are
encouraged/expected to participate. A student's grade is in no way
influenced by his/her response to a topic. The goal is to encourage
students to become informed about current events and be able to explain
why they agree or disagree with an issue.
Internet Safety
Students will also receive
instruction on Internet Safety during the class on Fridays.
The topics covered will
be:
-
Cyber Community
-
Personal Safety
-
Screen Names &
Passwords
-
